Email marketing is one of the most personal and direct ways to engage with prospects online. When someone visits your site and grants you permission to send messages to their inbox, it’s a privilege that should be treated with care and respect. However, before we can deliver valuable content in the body of an email, we need to ensure it gets opened. The subject line is key to achieving this. A well-crafted subject line has just one goal: to get the prospect to open the email.
In essence, the best subject lines sell the click – nothing more, nothing less. They are designed to pique curiosity or provide value, enticing the recipient to open the message and engage further.
Having said that, there are FOUR useful ways we can structure email subject lines to effectively improve open rates.
1. Using EMOTIONS
Many of the best email subject lines use emotion to grab prospects’ attention. The use of emoticons (anger, curiosity, surprise, humor) is an excellent way to captivate your prospects and intrigue them enough to CLICK and open the email to find out more (a clever way to improve email open rates).
2. Content Indicators
Email subject lines that use content indicators simply tell prospects what’s in the email. Unlike email subject lines that use emotion, content indicators swap curiosity with a direct clue for what your prospects will get for opening the email. Content Indicators can be a good way to improve email open rates, especially when they promote something that you know people on your list will want access to or to read.
3. Relevance
Another good way to improve email open rates is to use subject lines that are relevant to current events or the time of day. The approach of using contemporary, common popular topics of relevance, especially in terms of the time/date is an excellent way to grab prospects’ attention and make your email subject lines stand out.
4. Lists
People love top 10s, 5s, 3s, and more. Using your email subject line to promote a list of some kind in your email body is another good way to improve email open rates and get them to click the open button! You can create a whole range of list combinations on a wide variety of topics and subjects. Once your prospect opens the email, use the list to engage them and then link the list subjects/topic to some form of call to action you wish them to take.
Examples of using lists to improve email open rates:
- “Top 5 Screw Ups to avoid in a home business”
- “10 ways the wealthy think differently from average people…”
- “My favorite 3 methods to create an avalanche of leads…”
- “What do Donald Trump, Bill Gates, and Richard Branson have in common?”
Think of a subject line that you would open and write that. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Practice makes perfect. Don’t be afraid to be bold in your writing. Focus on sending TWO emails a day using the aforementioned tips, and you will be churning out the best email subject lines in no time and improve email open rates at will. One good way of knowing whether your best email subject lines are good is whether you get a good open rate. Nothing is set in stone, but if you were getting an average of 20-30%, then you’d be doing a good job. Remember the following points, improve email open rates by making better email subject lines, and improve email click-through rates by making better email bodies.
